Do you like flowers? Do you like birds? Do you LOVE Kansas City BBQ? We had all these delights at the home of Chris and Lehi German in Kansas City, MO. Chris and Lehi were hosts for our May meeting and we thank them for the best of bbq – Lehi is truly a master “smoker”. Chris provided the sides and Kathy Files filled the dessert course. None of our 15 members (+1 guest) left hungry. The lovely garden tour with birds gathered at Lehi's unique trolley feeders provided great visual entertainment.
President John Mock convened the meeting at 1 pm. He noted several members are facing medical challenges and were unable to attend. Cards were signed with best wishes for all. We miss you.
Minutes of our March meeting were approved and the treasurer's report given. Tom and Kathy gave a brief report on the Spring auctions and provided financial results. It was a treat for all to see that Bethel decanter with Sea Glade cutting in person – Lehi was the winning bidder to make it a special event gift for Chris.
Convention topics were discussed including table displays and our club vote for Board candidates and Constitution/Bylaws amendment proposals. Trudy Mock is in charge of the display area at the show arena. She explained the theme and requested volunteers to display and assist. Members who are attending the Convention volunteered to help transport Table Settings props for Trudy Mock. We're anxious to see the display come to life as her planning will make it an important part of the “Heiseyland” visit. The tables will be like magazine layouts, only live!
Kelly Bragg handled our raffle sales for a drawing to win a box full of great Heisey donated by the Mocks. Our host Lehi was the winner!
Program director Eric Tankesley-Clarke was unable to attend but he prepared a wonderful handout to facilitate the topic of Heisey etchings and carvings. Tom presented the program explaining techniques used and displayed examples of the different types: needle, pantograph, plate, double plate, silhouette, and carving. Great program with tag-team efforts by Eric and Tom. Thanks were given for helping us learn and understand this subject more completely.
Some of the program and show & tell items were merged at this meeting: Daisy 9” candlesticks/cut; Oakwood soda/Golf Scene etching; Empress 7” plate/Fisherman etching; two Larkin syrups/cut; Empress ice bucket/cut; Stanhope vase and celery/both with Maytime etching and red rods; Spencer decanter/Frontenac etching; Rooster head cocktail/Sultana stem; Carcassonne footed ice tea/Houston Post etching; National goblet/Fred Harvey etching; Star relish/Chevy Chase carving; and Lehi's extensive collection of Fox Chase etched pieces to name some of the items displayed.
July's meeting will be held in association with the National Depression Glass convention in Wellington, KS with Ande and Greg Henne serving as hosts. They will present a seminar on Heisey history at about 1 pm on July 9 which will also serve as our meeting program. Come join us – there's always lots of Heisey for sale at this event's show.
We adjourned for dessert – I think the blueberry pie a la mode was the #1 choice. Thanks to Chris and Lehi for hosting another super Great Plains club meeting.
