We can only hope and pray that the 2012 Percy and Vivian Moore event will have the same beautiful early September weather we enjoyed in Omaha for our 9-10-11 meeting.
Pat and Rex Lucke hosted 20 members in their lovely Heisey-filled home. We savored a delicious lunch on Heisey Sahara or Moongleam plates (your choice) from a dining table that was decorated in wonderful fall colors. Several floral arrangements graced various rooms -- the large Prince of Wales punch bowl with a lighted base and filled with cut flowers being the feature piece. A pair of #6 Doric candelabras framed the punch bowl and made the scene more spectacular. Let’s recap: Wonderfully decorated table…..Heisey glass plates and serving pieces…..Tasty food Win! Win! Win!
President John Mock convened the meeting and thanked Pat and Rex for hosting. Minutes of our previous meeting were approved and the treasurer’s report was given. Mary Cameron gave an update on the Cochran’s Matching Funds Challenge for the endowment fund and reported the progress of our club in meeting the $7,500 challenge from the Luckes that will end December 1, 2011. Mary encouraged each member to consider giving an amount to help with this worthwhile cause. The members voted to make a $100 club donation to support the 2011 Percy & Vivian Moore event in Newark.
A committee was named to make preparations for the 2012 Percy & Vivian Moore event in Omaha on September 7 & 8. Our club hosted this celebration in 2006 and President Mock challenged the committee to top that excellent experience and to make their first report at the November meeting. Gregg Cameron is heading up the committee and is open to suggestions – some decisions have already been made and some plans are in development stage. It will definitely be a good time so make sure to put the dates on your 2012 calendar and plan on joining the fun.
Trudy Mock provided her “Martha” moment with emphasis on Pat’s punch bowl base lit with LED lights. Trudy also brought pictures of her flower beds that were enhanced with pieces of Heisey that had “boo-boo’s”. The club presented her with a slightly impaired Amber Flying Mare that will now grace her Omaha home’s landscaping. We all hate to part with damaged Heisey so use her idea and enjoy the beauty of your favorite glassware in a new way.
Our program: A Conversation About Dawn” was presented by Mary Cameron and Eric Tankesley-Clarke. They used a tag-team system to inform us about the patterns made in that color and brought in Eva Zeisel’s influence with designs and cuttings for Dawn (didn’t hurt having a decanter in Dawn with a Zeisel cutting from the Lucke collection on display). There was a full table of Dawn pieces for examples and a helpful handout for future reference. Great program – thank you Mary and Eric – we learned so much.
Thanks to our generous member’s glass donations and Jean’s jams, we conducted a successful auction that bolstered the club treasury by $351 plus “pass-the-hat” (actually a Dawn bowl) proceeds of $130. The lucky bid winners obtained some neat Heisey pieces and delicious jam in the process.
Our members had scoured the antique malls and garage sales to acquire some nice pieces of Heisey to share at Show & Tell, including: #335 Prince of Wales water bottle; #4002 Aqua Caliente cocktail with Tally Ho etch; #1170 Pleat and Panel 8 oz. goblet; #305 Punty & Diamond Point syrup and cream, both with silver plate fittings; #1180 Brazil nut in Flamingo; #1235 Beaded Panel & Sunburst cake salver and a whimsy cake salver in the same pattern; #1469 Ridgeleigh cake salver with cutting; #1509 Queen Ann floral bowl with Everglades cutting; #335 Prince of Wales 9 inch nappy; #8005 Galaxy sherbet in Flamingo; #1225 Plain Band 8 inch comport cover only (anyone have an orphan bowl part?); #1555 cornucopia (elf’s shoe) vase; #1184 Yeoman stack set with cutting; and a #473 Narrow Flute with Rim pickle in Flamingo. There were many other nice items but everyone’s attention perked up for three pieces: a 4 inch #4045 ball vase in Alexandrite purchased for the proverbial song, a rare #1951 Cabochon sugar in Trial Blue with Dawn handles, and a breath-taking 8 inch #4045 Crystal ball vase with #2509 Krall bird and rose cutting. Wow, these three things alone were worth the price of admission!
Thanks to the Lucke’s for making everyone so welcome and the finale of four lovely desserts for the members’ trips home. It was a fine day with our “rocking” group. Our next meeting will be Saturday November 5, 2011 at Glen Gall’s home in the Des Moines area. The program will be on how various glass companies pieces react to UV (black) light.
