As members drove down the winding drive-way, Windmill Gardens came into view, the beautifully restored and expanded rural Nebraska home of Elmer and Janice Miller, hosts of the May 8, 2004, Great Plains Heisey Club meeting. Eighteen members enjoyed a wonderful lunch offered by Elmer and Janice beginning at 1:00.
As usual, President John Mock had a difficult time calling the meeting to order around 2:00. The minutes were approved and posted on the website. The Treasurer's Report was approved as presented. Expenditures were approved for the Convention Blind Auction and Centerpiece items and the Hospitality Room donation.
A Blind Auction item worth $150+ has been found and will be purchased and transported to the convention. The Centerpiece Committee of Bucky, Kathy, and Trudy asked for items from each state to add to the centerpiece. John Mock will make a cutout of the four states to be included also. Kathy will finalize the Centerpiece and take it to the Convention.
One of our members, Jean Will, is running for the Board of HCA. Gregg Cameron will make buttons for Jean and the Files’ grandson has made a preliminary design for the buttons. The club passed a resolution supporting Jean and voted to donate $50.00 to her campaign.
Members at the meeting going to the HCA Convention include: Tom and Kathy Files, Jean Will, Bucky Will, Rex and Pat Lucke, and Gregg and Mary Cameron.
Tom Files gave an update on the Bob and Sally Steinbach collection and thanked members for participating and purchasing items.
The winner of the Heisey Benefit Auction Contest was Bucky Will. Bucky missed the total for the 10 selected items by only $75 and was awarded a diamond H towel.
The Club voted to donate $50.00 to help defray expenses of the Hospitality Room at the HCA Convention.
The program for the July 10th meeting at John and Trudy Mock’s home will be comports. The program for the September 11 meeting at Gary and Shelby Corey’s will be barware and cigarette items. The program for the November 13th meeting at Glen Gall’s home will be pitchers and jugs.
Trudy Mock presented an idea for a fundraiser for HCA. Tom Files will call Bill Douglas to check on the possibility of doing this fundraiser and Gregg Cameron will make a prototype of the item to take to the HCA Convention.
Another successful 50-50 auction was held to raise money for the club—including the sale of a Japanese Garden Tray.
Janice Miller presented the program on Heisey lamps. She has about 18 Heisey electrified lamps with varying types of glass and material shades
and had them labeled throughout her home for walking tours by the attendees. Additional lamps were brought by members to complement Janice’s wonderful items. It was truly an ‘enlightening’ experience.
An interesting swap was held after the meeting. Members brought orphan cream and sugars and tried to make matches. Rex Lucke stated, “There are more orphans on this table than at Boys’ Town.” Some matches or sales were made so several items found new homes.
Show and Tell was relatively small for this group. Items included: #1469 Ridgeleigh individual ash tray in Sahara, #479 Petal hotel cream and sugar in Flamingo, #1401 Empress 7 inch plate in Cobalt, #1503 Crystolite two-light candelabrum with the #1503 bobeches and “J” prisms, #1405 Ipswich goblet, juice, and oyster cocktail, #194 Museum Paperweight, #1404 Old Sandwich ash tray in Cobalt, #3362 Charter Oak eight ounce goblet in Moongleam, Fairacre parfait in Moongleam, #394 Narrow Flute individual domino sugar with an etching, (4) #433 Greek Key butter pats, #433 Greek Key tankard, 2 sparrows, and the small 7 inch Pinwheel and Fan basket (which Gregg agreed to sell to Kathy but was quickly nixed by Mary).
The meeting adjourned and as usual members continued to talk Heisey—some even may have moved on to the lovely Bulldog Inn in Murdock.
