Sixteen members and one guest attended the Great Plains Heisey Club meeting in Leavenworth, Kansas at the home of Jean Will on May 13, 2006. Although the home of the famous federal prison, we enjoyed “spending time in Leavenworth” for a Heisey meeting. It was a cold, cloudy day that turned beautiful at the Missouri border. Though we were all there to learn more about Heisey, certainly one of the highlights of the day was the Kansas City barbeque served for lunch. It was the best ! President Bucky Will called the meeting to order at 1:40. This was an amazing start due to the great food given the fact many members were known to eat seconds and maybe a few even had thirds !
The previous meeting minutes were approved as they were posted on the website.
Tom Files, Treasurer, reported on the treasury balance. Dues are still being collected and the club continues to profit from the 50/50 auctions we have at each meeting.
Mary Cameron reported that the club’s annual report was sent to HCA on May 1. So, a discussion was held regarding the club’s vote on Board members at the annual meeting. Our club has seven voting members and most will be attending the convention, but those not attending were encouraged to request an absentee ballot.
The club also discussed donations for the convention. It was decided in April to donate $50.00 to help defray Hospitality Room expenses and Tom Files will send that money. A discussion was held regarding our participation as a club in the Blind Auction and the Centerpiece Auction events. It was decided that we would not participate this year because club members have already donated cash and Heisey to be auctioned at the Percy Moore dinner in Omaha in October. The Club will make a $1,000 donation to HCA at the annual meeting for operating expenses. Club members also advised they will volunteer for various convention duties.
Jean Will gave an updated report on her involvement with the HCA Board.
A discussion was held about the Percy Moore dinner to be held in Omaha in October. More ideas for fundraising were discussed and approved. Gregg will make more brochures for the HCA Convention and Tom will provide publicity/registration information to the Curator for inclusion in the HCA News. After convention, Mary will contact all the study clubs with invitations.
The July 8 meeting is at Gregg and Mary Cameron’s home in Ames, Iowa and the program will be on Heisey toothpicks. Pauline Soderholm will be the speaker and feature her collection of Heisey toothpicks. Everyone should come for lunch at 12:30.
Jean and Bucky gave the program on Heisey colors that included a display of pieces in most of the Heisey production colors.
Show and Tell followed with: Continental wine; Yeoman tray for a smoking set in Moongleam; Greek Key 4oz oil; Duquesne 8 oz. footed soda with Normandie etch; Plantation marmalade; Athena sugar; Peerless 1 oz. cordial; Crystolite jam jar; Carcassonne cigarette holder in Cobalt; Saturn violet vase in Zircon; 201 Harvey Amber tumbler; Lodestar Dawn candleholder; Lariat cream and sugar with unusual cutting; Revere 1/2 lb candy jar with cutting; Emerald Pineapple and Fan rose bowl; Colonial hotel cream and sugar with cutting; 2 - Punty and Diamond Point crimped bowls (different sizes); 2- Pineapple and Fan custard cups; Bamboo bud vase in Moongleam; Helmet basket in Flamingo with Cloister cutting; and a Fred Harvey Trading Co. souvenir box.
The 50/50 Auction was held next and contained many nice pieces of Heisey for sale – including original Crystolite brochures from a jewelry store sale. Members continued to talk Heisey and then headed home full of good food and good Heisey talk.
